Rumor has it that Apple is readying a low-cost version of the iPhone for emerging markets around the world.

Approx cost will be Rs: 10,000 ($200)

SAN FRANCISCO: Reports echoing online Tuesday fueled speculation that Apple is tailoring a low-price version of the iPhone for China and other emerging markets.
DigiTimes.com, which specializes in news about the supply side of the technology industry, cited unnamed sources as saying an iPhone model made with less expensive parts would be rolled out in the second half of this year.
The rumor was later endorsed by the Wall Street Journal, which based its report on people briefed on the matter.
The low-priced iPhone will have a big screen along the lines of those popular with consumers today, according to DigiTimes.

Apple Inc. (AAPL) plans to sell a smaller, cheaper version of the iPhone as soon as this year, said a person familiar with the plans, part of a push to gain customers in developing nations.

Apple, which had been working on a more affordable smartphone since at least February 2011, is weighing retail prices of $99 to $149 for a device that would debut in late 2013, at the earliest, according to the person, who asked not to be named because the negotiations are private. Apple has spoken to at least one of the top U.S. wireless carriers about its plans, the person said yesterday.
