Apple to begin mass producing sapphire crystal displays

There have been rumours how Apple’s aggressively pushing to take its Arizona plant live in the recent past and it is being believed that Apple along with GT Advanced Technologies plans to start manufacturing sapphire crystal displays for its future devices.

Now, 9To5Mac reports that GT Advanced has already received 518 furnace and chamber systems.

This would reportedly enable it to build about 103 million to 116 million 5-inch iPhone displays per year.

Late last year, there were reports that GT Advanced Technologies had inked a deal with Apple for sapphire crystal screens.

The rumour that the iPhone maker could replace Corning’s Gorilla Glass with sapphire for its gadget screens may possibly be true.

Sapphire displays would mean more durable iPhones that have a longer shelf life.

Previously, we’ve also seen a document – a correspondence between US Foreign Trade Zone officials and Apple’s Deputy Director of Global Trade Compliance – clearly mentioning the company’s “aggressive” plans to begin manufacturing at the Arizona plant.

There are many speculative possibilities about how Apple plans to implement the sapphire display protection on iDevices.

It could use the sapphire crystal as camera lens covers for the iPhone or iPod Touch, for the new TouchID home button embedded on iPads and also in applications for the iWatch.

Apple has also applied for a patent for off-screen gestures using pressure sensitivity, where too a sapphire crystal display makes most sense.
