Apple is set to introduce the 8GB iPhone 5c in India, NDTV Gadgets has learnt.

The 8GB variant was officially unveiled back in March, and was initially available in UK, France, Germany, Australia, and China. Recently, the company launched it in additional countries, including Netherlands, Italy, Belgium, Sweden, Poland, Czech Republic, Ireland, Portugal, Austria, Spain, Denmark, Finland, Switzerland, and Norway.

Now, Apple is set to add to this list, with India amongst the countries that is slated to get the cheapest current-generation iPhone.

The iPhone 5c was launched in India carrying a price tag of Rs. 41,900 for the 16GB model. 8GB variant is cheaper than the 16GB iPhone 5c by EUR 50 (Rs. 4,100 approximately), so a sub-Rs. 35,000 price tag for the 8GB iPhone 5c is likely.

While the 8GB iPhone 5c is not without its limitations as we've noted earlier, the strategy of offering previous generations iPhone models at lower price points has worked well for Apple India in the recent past, so it's likely that sales of the first 'colourful' iPhone will also get a push thanks to the price.

During the last earnings call, Apple CEO Tim Cook highlighted the growth in the India market, which industry insiders have attributed to the various cash backs and exchange offers that Apple has launched in the country.

"iPhone sales grew by strong double-digits year-over-year, and in India and Vietnam sales more than doubled," Cook had said while answering an analyst's questions.

The 8GB iPhone 5c will launch in the country in the coming weeks, NDTV Gadgets has learnt, indicating that Apple is in no mood to let go of its momentum in the region.

It is likely that Apple will launch the 8GB iPhone 5c in other emerging markets as well. Apple established a new all-time record for total iPhone sales in the BRIC countries in the previous quarter, and while the 8GB variant is far from perfect, it will further Apple's reach in these markets.

Just last week, we learned about Apple ending iPhone 4 sales in India. That was a quick decision only months after the model was reintroduced and made available. We also mentioned that the iPhone 4 helped maintain the iPhone marketshare with a 2.4% jump from last January to March. I was a bit saddened by the news, but Apple is expected to introduce the entry-level 8GB iPhone 5c in India next month.

The iPhone 5c could be priced anything between Rs 35,000-Rs 37,000 which is about $60—with a $33 buyback deal.

The iPhone 6 may be on your radar right now—what with all the rumors—but some countries are only just getting the iPhone 5c. It’s more of a mid-range smartphone, but boasts of LTE connectivity.

So maybe that’s why the iPhone 4 is bowing out of India; Apple wants to push the iPhone 5c instead of the still-capable iPhone 4. Nothing is official yet, though, so we’ll wait for an announcement direct from Apple.

If the iPhone 4 is indeed out of the picture, then the iPhone 5c is a great replacement, and an 8GB version is logical a response to the demand for a lower-priced model. In most areas, the lowest-end phone is an a16GB iPhone 5c.
