Apple reveals Indian govt sought information on 65 devices, launches veiled attack on Google
NEW DELHI: Apple on Wednesday joined several other technology companies like Google and Facebook and issued a transparency report, disclosing the number of requests for information it received from governments in the first half of 2013.
Apple said it received around 2000 requests for user data from governments. It did not provide the precise figure because for the US government the company could not specify exact number of requests due to the gag orders that come attached with the law enforcement letters seeking information.
India did not seek information about any Apple account during the specified period. However, the Indian officials made 27 requests, seeking information on 65 Apple devices. Apple said that it complied with 11 of these requests.
Apple received over 12,400 requests for device information from various governments.
"The most common account requests involve robberies and other crimes or requests from law enforcement officers searching for missing persons or children, finding a kidnapping victim, or hoping to prevent a suicide," Apple said in the transparency report. "In very rare cases, we are asked to provide stored photos or email."
"Device requests never include national security-related requests," the company added.
