Apple introduced Apple Maps with iOS 6 in 2012 as a replacement for Google Maps. However, due to lack of extensive testing and inaccuracy, it hasn’t seen the kind of success Apple expected. But that hasn’t stopped Apple from constantly trying to improve the app. With iOS 10, Apple Maps got a major overhaul with new features and brand new UI. Also, while live traffic data wasn’t available in India, the same has now started showing up in the app.
As of now, it is not clear if it is a server side update or the new feature roll out comes as a part of iOS 10.2 update. However, Apple Maps can now display live traffic updates when you look for directions from your current location to the destination. It’s a nice addition as you can now look for congested areas and skip the traffic. However, navigation feature is not available as yet, and you may still have to rely on Google Maps for that.
Talking about new features as part of iOS 10 update, the new design brings location details and easy access controls. The app can also proactively look for the event, find location and directions. It can also suggest you about estimated time to reach work.
The new interface also lets you to conveniently filter down and search based on fast food, coffee shops, desserts, bakeries, groceries and restaurants. For instance, if you’re looking to have lunch or dinner, you can narrow down your search based on the Cuisine you would want to have – sea food, continental, Chinese, Thai, Italian, Indian and more. Other details such as address, telephone number and working hours of the restaurant are also available.
While navigation feature is yet to arrive in India, the interface now brings up information about the distance, estimated arrival and the traffic on your route. Apple has also added dynamic view feature that lets you pan-and-zoom into the route to look for traffic ahead. If there is traffic ahead, maps will proactively suggest you alternative routes.
What’s more, Apple has also added Quick Controls to let you check for petrol pumps on the way. There is also ‘Parked Car’ marker that helps you find where you parked your vehicle. It works with CarPlay or Bluetooth to recognize where the phone last interacted with your car, and mark the location in the Maps app.
