Even though it’s been only a month since the launch of Apple’s iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, the rumor mills are already busy with leaks relating to the iPhone 8. The features that were expected on the iPhone 7 are reportedly set to arrive on the iPhone 8. A recent report by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo from KGI Securities predicted that the iPhone 8 could feature an all-glass body akin to the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4s. Adding to that, the iPhone 8 was also rumored to enable the 3D Fingerprint scanner. A patent which has been awarded to Apple suggests that this rumor may turn out to be true after all.
The patent is titled “Capacitive fingerprint sensor including an electrostatic lens” and was filed back in September 2014. Apple Insider reports that the patent was awarded to Apple and has been published by the US Patent and Trademark Office. This is in line with rumors that the iPhone 8 would come with an edge-to-edge OLED display and would do away with the physical Touch ID home button. The home button on the iPhones have evolved from executing a “return to home” button command to invoking Siri and also embedding Touch ID fingerprint sensor. The patent describes how the capacitive fingerprint scanner will get rid of the problems faced using other fingerprint sensors.
According to the patent, Apple proposes to use electrostatic lenses for the fingerprint sensor which will be embedded under the display of the iPhone 8. Apple aims to establish a solution for the blurring of the finger’s electric field which is caused due to the separation between the contact surface where the finger is placed and the capacitive sensing array. The capacitive sensing technology that Apple proposes to use will work through gaps in space. In the iPhone 7 , Apple made a slight change with the Touch ID on the home button. As opposed to pressing the home button to make Touch ID work previously, now just placing the finger on the home button would make it work. The other functions on the home button work the same.
If Apple chooses to deploy this technology in the iPhone 8, then it would join the recently launched Xiaomi Mi 5s , which features the Qualcomm Sense ID ultrasonic fingerprint sensing technology. The fingerprint scanner on the Xiaomi Mi 5s smartphone is placed below the front glass and is extremely fast at recognizing fingerprints plus it is more accurate. The best part about the Sense ID fingerprint scanner is that it also works when the finger is wet, dirty or oily.
Adding to the rumors about the iPhone 8, along with the glass body, it is expected to be built around an aluminum or stainless steel frame. More rumors suggest that the iPhone 8 will have a 10-nanometer A11 chip and could also feature long-range wireless charging and iris or facial scanning. The iPhone 8 is expected to be launched in the fall of 2017.
