Apple has started rolling out the second public beta of iOS 10. With that Apple also introduced iOS 10 developer beta 3 with one suprise feature – moisture detection.
The third developer beta now shows a prompt message alerting users to disconnect the lightning accessory when liquid or moisture is detected in the lightning connector. It further asks iOS 10 users to disconnect the accessory and allow the lightning connector to dry. The reports indicate that Apple has activated a secret moisture sensor with the latest developer beta.
The feature is reportedly working only on the latest iPhones – iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus and iPhone SE. Apple hasn’t confirmed whether these latest iPhones came with moisture sensor but it is definitely a step in the right direction.
With smartphones becoming primary computers, they are being used everywhere. From boardroom to beach, smartphones have become the only companion device for many. With most OEMs already adding IP68 certification, making their devices both water and dust resistant, Apple certainly needed to bring some new feature.
Rumours are also indicating that the next-generation iPhone (dubbed as iPhone 7) will be water resistant. Samsung’s latest Galaxy S7 and S7 edge come with basic water resistance and the South Korean company sells an Active version of the device which is more rugged and water resistant for a longer duration.
On the lower side of the price spectrum, Motorola’s Moto G3 comes with basic water resistance. The water resistance is good enough to save it from unexpected drop.
Sony has been offering water and dust proofing with its Xperia Z lineup for quite sometime. Its good to see Apple taking the software route to protect iPhones from water damage but it would need to build liquid resistant phones in order to make it really count.
