Apple has rolled out the next beta version for iOS 10.2. With iOS 10.2, Apple introduced new features including emojis, wallpapers, and the new TV app. The iOS 10.2 beta 4 will mostly brings bug fixes to the the earlier version. The beta version is available as an over-the-air (OTA) update, it can also be downloaded from Apple’s developer website or installed using iTunes. The beta version is now available to public beta testers as well.
A public beta allows people from the non-developer community test out the software before it is rolled out to the general population. Unlike the developer beta releases, the public beta is free of charge for those who sign up for Apple’s Beta Software Program. If you are a registered developer you will get the notification about new beta versions almost as soon as they are launched. If you are not a developer, you can still get access by signing up for the Apple iOS Public Beta Testing Program. All you need to do is sign up on the Apple Beta Program website and enrol yourself for the program. Once you allow your iOS device to receive future public beta updates, you can then straightaway head to Settings -> General -> Software Update and find the download. Make sure before you start exploring the imperfect beta versions, you have all the data of your iOS devices backed up.
Highlight of the previous beta version of the software was the inclusion of an SOS feature that allows users in India to call up emergency services when you press the power button on your smartphone or tablet five times. Among other changes in the iOS 10.2 beta, most talked about feature was the addition of over 70 new emojis including the anticipated Shrug and Fingers Crossed emoji. The preview offers full Unicode 9 emoji support which includes emojis that were approved in June this year. As a part of Apple’s plans of adding more racially and gender diverse emojis, the new emoji keyboard is also set to bring in emojis with both genders and all skin tones. A total of 16 new professions will be added to the emoji keyboard in both genders and all six skin tone options. This takes the list of jobs to 192 distinct images. There are also a host of new animal emojis which are included in iOS 10.2 such as fox, duck, squid, and gorilla.
The iOS 10.2 update also brings in new wallpapers which are exclusive to Apple’s latest iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus smartphones. Apple has further added a new feature that saves camera settings so that one doesn’t always the start the camera app with auto mode. So for example, if you like to shoot in HDR or using the monochrome filter, you will get an option to save that setting so that the next time you pull out your iPhone to capture anything, the moment isn’t missed.
There is also a redesigned Videos and Music app. In the Music app, users now have an option to rate music stars. The shuffle and repeat controls have been relocated and now sport a button look. There is also a new ‘Press and Hold to Speak’ menu under the home button settings. For iMessages, the iOS 10.2 update brings new ‘Celebration’ and ‘Love’ screen effect. There is a new headphone icon in status bar for Bluetooth audio devices.
