Back in August, the first reports about the ‘Touch Disease’ plaguing iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus users surfaced online. This issue involved a flickering grey bar at the top of the display, and the touch input of the screen deteriorating over time. Apple has finally acknowledged the issue, and has announced a repair program exclusively for iPhone 6 Plus users.
As a part of the ‘Multi-Touch Repair Program’, Apple is offering a chance for iPhone 6 Plus users to get their device repaired for a reduced amount of Rs 9,900. “If your iPhone 6 Plus is exhibiting the symptoms noted above, is in working order, and the screen is not cracked or broken, Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider will repair your device for a manufacturer’s suggested service price of Rs 9,900,” the program’s website reads. In case you have already got your device repaired at an Apple service center before by paying the full amount, the company will contact you and arrange for a reimbursement of the extra amount.
While the popular sentiment would be better late than never, there are however a couple of things worth noting. This repair program is exclusive to iPhone 6 Plus users, and ignores iPhone 6 users who too are reported to have been facing the same problem. In other words, if you are an iPhone 6 user and facing the Touch Disease issue, you will have to visit an Apple service center and get your device repaired by paying the full amount.
Secondly, despite what numerous reports have claimed, Apple refuses to take the blame for the issue. Experts have attributed the issue to a structural flaw in the thin phones, where stress causes the chips governing touch functionality to eventually lose connection with the motherboard. Instead of calling it a flaw, Apple is putting the blame on the users. It says that the Touch Disease is caused after the device is “dropped multiple times on a hard surface and then incurring further stress on the device.”
Asking to pay for repairs for seemingly no fault of their own may not sit too well with iPhone 6 Plus owners. But the silver lining is that by capping the service cost, Apple is ensuring that users don’t have to pay Rs 15,000 to 20,000 to get the display and other components replaced. If you are still not convinced about getting your device repaired, the only other option left seems to be to get it replaced.
Asking to pay for repairs for seemingly no fault of their own may not sit too well with iPhone 6 Plus owners. But the silver lining is that by capping the service cost, it is ensuring that users don’t have to pay much more as Apple typically just replaces the unit rather than repairing it in India, which turns out to be very expensive.
