In yet another controversial diktat by
the Devendra Fadnavis government,
Maharashtra on Tuesday decided it will
issue autorickshaw permits to only
those people who speak Marathi from
November 1 this year.
"New autorickshaw permits from
November 1 will be issued to only
those applicants who can speak
Marathi," Maharashtra Transport
Minister Diwakar Raote said.
Maharashtra's capital Mumbai alone
has more than 11 lakh auto permits.
The state is considerably urbanised
and the order is also likely to impact
Pune, Nashik, Aurangabad and other
urban centres.
The previous Congress-NCP
government never made Marathi
mandatory for such permits. The rule
then required than an applicant must
be a resident of Maharshtra for at least
15 years, a certificate not very difficult
to get.
After the Fadnavis government took
over last year, a survey was conducted
and it was found that around 70 per
cent of auto drivers in the state are
non-Maharashtrians, prompting the
government to take the decision.
