NEW DELHI: As promised last month, Google has started rolling out the first major update for Android Wear, the company's operating system for wearables.

The update brings fitness-focused features and now allows Android Wear-powered smartwatches to support built-in GPS sensors, and music storage and playback.

It also allows devices to connect independently with Bluetooth headsets for listening to music.

With support for GPS functionality, Android Wear devices will be able to track activity including things like route, distance and speed without the need to connect to a smartphone.

Users will be able to re-sync and transfer all their fitness stats once they connect their watch to the smartphone.

Users will also be able to store music on their watches and connect them to wireless Bluetooth headsets for listening, without the need to carry their smartphones.

The latest version of Google Play Music supports this functionality and users of LG G Watch, Moto 360 and Samsung Gear Live will also benefit from the new feature over the next few days.

It's worth pointing out that Sony Smartwatch 3 is the only Android Wear smartwatch that comes with a built-in GPS sensor.

The watch is now available for purchase in the US.

To help in Android Wear app discovery, Google has created eight new app collections in Google Play.

Google has also promised another update that will bring support for downloadable watch faces from the Play Store.
