Earlier this year, Google took everyone by surprise by releasing the Android N Developer Preview well ahead of its I/O developer conference. The company has also simplified the installation process, making it easier for users to install the update on their compatible Nexus smartphones. Now, while new Android version is usually released around October, this year, Google may release the final version later this month on August 5. The final version of Android Nougat 7.0 update is also expected to include monthly security patch for the month of August. The piece of information comes from reliable leaker, Evan Blass , who also mentioned that the update won’t make it to the Nexus 5. This also means, that Nexus 5 has reached end of life and will officially remain on Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow.

Ever since the first preview build, Google has been adding new features in every new build, along with bug fixes and performance improvements. Some of the key features coming as a part of Android Nougat 7.0 include multi-window support, allowing you to run two apps side-by-side. Google has also updated the notification centre with inline reply feature – allowing users to reply to text messages right from the notifications panel.

Google has also worked on background optimizations to doze mode, to help conserve battery life. There is also Project Svelte which focuses on RAM optimizations to minimize memory used by apps. Other features such as improved data saver, picture-in-picture and TV recording, number blocking, call screening and always on VPN are also a part of the package. Support for Vulkan API for smoother graphics performance and support for Emoji Unicode 9 are other features that you get with Android Nougat 7.0.

Google went through crowd sourcing campaign to name the Android version, where suggestions included Neyyappam, Naankhatai and Nutella among others. Finally, Nougat bagged the final trophy, which is a sweet made from sugar or honey and roasted nuts. The update will make its way to Nexus 6, Nexus 5X, Huawei Nexus 6P, Google Pixel C, HTC Nexus 9 and Sony Xperia Z3. Among other smartphones, HTC has already announced the update for HTC 10, One M9 and One A9. Also, Samsung Galaxy S7, S7 edge and LG G5 are other smartphones that could be treated with Android 7.0 Nougat in the coming months.
