Andy Rubin, co-founder of Android, is
reportedly planning to comeback to the
smartphone business. According to
reports, he is more interested in
developing smartphones, rather than just
software for smartphones. Rubin was last
heading the robotics division of Google ,
which he quit to begin Playground Global,
an incubator for hardware startups. So
far, Playground has raised about $300
million. Rubin also associated with
Redpoint Ventures in April this year.
Rubin’s return to the smartphone market
will come at a time when Google is
reportedly looking to streamline
fragmentation in Android platform by
developing its own chips. With its own
chips, Google aims to develop solutions
that compete with rival Apple in the high
end segment. Google is said to be looking
for partners with which it can co-develop
the processors.
Rubin’s plans to get back into the
smartphone space was first reported by
The Information. Considering his expertise
in software, we may expect a feature rich
smartphone. But it remains to be seen
which segment it will be targeted. It
remains to be seen whether Rubin’s plans
include smartphones running on Android
or go the fork route and create a custom
OS on top of Android.
