Former domestic stalwarts Praveen Amre and Surendra Bhave have thrown their hat into the ring in the race for India’s head coach.

The batsmen-turned-coaches confirmed to The Hindu that they have submitted their applications to the Board of Control for Cricket in India on Thursday.

Friday is the deadline for applying for the post of head coach, after which the BCCI will scrutinise the applications.

Amre, the former India batsman, has coached Mumbai to three Ranji Trophy titles. He has also been in charge of the India-A team.

The gritty batsman has, over the last four years, pioneered the concept of personal coach in India, working with the likes of Robin Uthappa and Dinesh Karthik.

Bhave, after serving as a national selector from 2008 to 2012, took charge of Maharashtra’s Ranji team and guided it to the final of the Ranji Trophy in 2013-14, its first final appearance since 1992-93 when he was the captain of the team.

For the last two seasons, Bhave has been working with Haryana.
