Airtel seeks TRAI approval to offer exclusive video content
In another effort to provide as many services as it can provide even before the Reliance Jio hits the market, Bharti Airtel (Airtel) on Monday has written to Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) if the company can go ahead for video content on exclusive basis.
The company said in the letter that a ‘global content provider wishes to offer their video content on exclusive basis over the Closed Communications Network (CECN) of Airtel’, in compliance with the TRAI’s regulation on ‘Prohibition of Discriminatory Tariffs for Data Services’.
“While such an arrangement with the global content provider over CECN along with its exclusive offerings to our customers would be compliant to the regulations, it may well be viewed by some stakeholders in violation of principles of Net Neutrality,” Ravi P Gandhi, Chief Regulatory Officer, Airtel, said in the letter to TRAI.
The company said it wants to take TRAI’s permission before any business decision on such an arrangement so that it can go ahead with the deal smoothly.
Though the company did not disclose the name of the content provider, but if it gets through the deal, Airtel can provide many content through intranet (closed door network) such as videos, music and games.
This would be a competition to what Reliance Jio is planning when it launches its services across the country – Jio World – an ecosystem of apps that include Jio Beats, Jio News, Jio On-demand, Jio Drive and Jio Play.
