MUMBAI: All India Radio (AIR) has commenced its free news SMS service in four new languages including Gujarati, Assamese, Tamil
and Malayalam on pilot basis.

The news service division of AIR has thus made the service available in 10 languages in total, including English.

Last month, Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar had launched the AIR free SMS service in five Indian languages—Hindi, Sanskrit, Marathi, Dogri and Nepali.

AIR launched its SMS service in English in September last year and claims to have already touched a database of over four lakh subscribers.

The service aims to provide important news free to the subscribers in their preferred language on their mobile phones.

The news service division is also working on a database of subscribers of its SMS service for providing customised messages.
