I will post this just to clear some doubts for those who are new in Asian football.
So there are two premier club football championship in Asia.
1. The first one is AFC Champions League. This is equivalent to UEFA Champions League. The winner will get direct access to FIFA Club World Cup. The format is the clubs are divided into 2 division. One is west, another is east. This is done to reduce transport cost and time for clubs. Asia is so big unlike Europe. So it is needed. Each division(East/west) has total 20 clubs divided into 5 groups. Top club in every group will qualify to further R16. Plus 3 best runner up of 5 groups in each division will advance to R 16. Structure is GS-R16-R8-SF- Division Final- Asian Final. A lot of cash prize is given for just appearing in GS of this tournaments. India is in West group and has 1 direct spot to GS for now. Some countries like Qatar etc have 3 spots. FC Goa is representing us this year. Currently ISL league toppers get access to this competition GS spot.
2. This is AFC Cup. This is second premier club competition in Asia. This is just like Europa League. But unlike AFC CL, where clubs are divided into 2 division (East/West), here they have more regional division. Like Central Asia group, South Asia Group where India is playing etc. This is based on different federation Like SAFF, CAF, ASEAN FF etc. This is done so because it is presumed that those clubs who play AFC Cup does not have lot of money to spend on transport etc. India have one direct access to this competition with another one qualifying in nature. ATKMB is representing us for Direct spot while Bengaluru FC is going to represent us in Qualifying tournaments. I league table toppers gets direct access while ISL Play off winners get that qualifying spot for AFC Cup.
Schedule- Normal AFC Season starts from January to November. But due to Pandemic it is going to start from April this year.
