Group Play

Group Play is a feature that was first showcased by Samsung on its phones and tablets. With Group Play, you can use WiFi to instantly share and play music stored on your device with other devices in the vicinity—all devices need to be connected to the same WiFi network. First, you need to download the app and then have it connect with the other devices. You can then play music from the host device. To use this feature you can try out free apps such as Chorus, Syncsong, SoundSeeder and Music Pool—all work in a similar fashion.

Air Video

All iOS devices have limited storage. This is a problem if you like to watch a lot of videos on the device. Within your WiFi network, you can solve this issue with an app called Air Video HD (iOS only; Rs 620). You have to first install server software on your computer and once the server is running, add all the folders where your videos are stored. Now all you need to do is connect your iOS device to WiFi and Air Video will instantly show you all videos, arranged by folder. Tap on a video to start streaming over WiFi. If a file format is not supported, the app converts it on-the-fly. Android users can use the free VLC Direct app or AirStream for similar function.

Plex

Plex is a free, cross-platform, media player/server available for Windows, Mac and Linux. You can use it to play video, audio and view photos stored on your computer. Pair it with the free Plex app on Android, iOS or Windows and you can also stream your entire multimedia collection to your portable device. One of the highlights of Plex is that it automatically organises your multimedia by downloading associated information like cover art and movie/TV show information. All of this is also shared on the mobile app.

Air Display 2

Multiple monitors can improve your productivity. However, if you can’t install one you can use an existing spare tablet or phone as a second display. With Air Display 2 (Rs 636 for Android, Rs 620 for iOS), you can use your Android device or Apple iPhone/iPad as a second monitor for your computer. Both devices need to be connected to the same WiFi network and additional server software needs to be installed on your Windows or MAC computer. Remember, that it currently does not support Windows 10. Once installed, launch the app and it will automatically work like an extended monitor with full touch functionality. It can be used in both portrait and landscape mode.

Airdroid

If you frequently connect your Android phone to the computer for data transfer, AirDroid can make your life a lot simpler. It’s completely free and enables a wireless connection between your Android smartphone and the computer. You don’t need to install any additional software on your computer because it works using a web browser. Install and open the app on your phone and on your PC open AirDroid Web | Manage your phone on web in any web browser. You can scan the QR code on the computer screen into the app to create the secure connection. The browser interface is easy to use and there are several features on offer. You can take a backup of your phone, send and receive SMS from your browser, view phone notifications, view details about your phone’s storage and even mirror your phone’s screen.

Mobile Air Mouse

You can convert your handheld smartphone or tablet into a remote control for your computer that works over WiFi. You don’t need to point your device at the screen and it even works from another room. Android users can try Mobile Mouse Lite first and then purchase the paid version for full functionality. iOS users can use the Mobile Mouse remote app (Rs 120). You will have to first install the app on your mobile device and the free server software on your PC. Both the computer and the mobile device need to be connected to the same WiFi network. You can then use the phone/tablet as a trackpad or as an ‘air mouse’ (move device in the air to control the mouse; available on devices which have an accelerometer).

WiFi IP Camera

If you have an old Android phone or iOS device lying spare, you can convert it into a wireless camera. Android users can use the free IP Webcam app while iOS users can use the Manything home security camera app—both are free to use. Install the app on your smartphone and then place it at an angle from where you can easily view the entire area to be monitored. IP Webcam app on Android lets users view the stream using VLC player or a web-browser. Manything app on iOS can only stream to another device which has the Manything app installed.
