If you are planning to catch up with friends and family over Facebook, WhatsApp or other social media on Sunday, your efforts will come a cropper. This is because the '#Anandi Ban' government plans to block mobile internet services on Sunday.
The state government had banned these services in August last year when violence broke out during the Patidar agitation. This time the mobile internet services will be blocked from 9 am to 1 pm in Ahmedabad and other districts as candidates will be appearing in the test for recruitment for 2,480 posts of talatis.
The Revenue Talatis Recruitment Exam is being conducted by 'Gaun Seva Pasandgi Mandal' (Gujarat State Subsidiary Selection Board or GSSSB) across the state. The exam will be held on Sunday from 10 am to 1 pm.
Considering the sensitive nature of the exam for recruitment of talatis, internet service providers have been asked to shut down all internet-based social media services from 9 am to 1 pm to prevent the misuse of mobiles during the exam," says a notification signed by Ahmedabad additional district magistrate, AB Gor.
Asit Vora, chairperson of the Gaun Seva Pasandgi Mandal, said they had requested the government to block mobile internet services when the exam was being held.
"This will reduce the chances of misuse of mobile phones during the exam. More than 8 lakh candidates will take the test in various districts,'' said Vora.
Ahmedabad collector Rajkumar Beniwal said the internet ban was necessary to avoid irregularities such as the 2015 leak of talatis exam paper. He further said that the mobile internet services are being banned in other districts as well.
It may be recalled that more than 15 people were arrested in connection with the leak of paper for recruitment of talatis conducted by Gujarat Panchayat Bharti Board.
