What is Spectrum?

Spectrum is a range of electromagnetic frequencies used by telecom companies for establishing a connection between a cell tower and a mobile phone


Allocation of Spectrum

Administratively allocated to operators in all 22 licensed service areas or circles pre 2010 which was non-liberalised i.e only usable for 2G services

Pre 2010

Post 2010

Airwaves allotted through Spectrum Auction where operators paid market discovered price for liberalised spectrum which can be used for 2G/3G/4G.


Vodafone Idea has the highest spectrum holdings in the country at 1,846 MHz   Bharti Airtel is at the second position with 1,729 MHz spectrum holding Reliance Jio is a distant third with 1,108 MHz spectrum holding


Spectrum Auction 2021

700 MHz, 800 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, 2300 MHz, and 2500 MHz to be auctioned for 20 years period 2251.25 MHz spectrum to be offered in the auction Total valuation of Rs 3,92,332.7 crores Spectrum Auction to be held by March 2021 DoT yet to invite Notice for Applications which could send Auction to the end of March 2021
