Qualcomm launches Snapdragon 678 SoC for affordable smartphones

US-based chipmaker Qualcomm has announced the new Snapdragon 678 SoC for mid-range smartphones. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 678 is the successor to the Snapdragon 675 chipset that was launched in October 2018. Snapdragon 678 is an octa-core processor and is built on the 11 nm process. It comes with Qualcomm Kryo 460 CPU core clocked at up to 2.2GHz and Adreno 612 GPU.

Kedar Kondap, vice president, product management, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., said in a blog post, “We are uniquely positioned to support OEMs in delivering the next generation of devices with in-demand features and performance. Snapdragon 678 brings advanced mobile capabilities for daily entertainment at lightning-fast speeds over reliable connections and long-lasting battery life for consumers worldwide.”

The Snapdragon 678 comes with the Qualcomm Snapdragon X12 LTE modem that can deliver download speeds up to 600 Mbps and upload speeds up to 150 Mbps. It also supports dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0, dual 4G VoLTE, NFC, GPS, Beidou, Galileo, GLONASS, QZSS, SBAS, USB 3.1 Type-C, and Qualcomm Quick Charge 4+ technology.

The chipset supports display up to Full-HD+ (1080 x 2520 pixels) resolution with up to 10-bit color depth and external displays up to 4K UHD resolution. For the camera, the Snapdragon 678 comes with the Qualcomm Spectra 250L image signal processor that supports single cameras with up to 48 MP and dual cameras with up to 16 MP. In terms of audio, it supports Qualcomm TrueWireless Stereo Plus technology, Qualcomm Aqstic audio technology, and Qualcomm aptX audio technology.
