Kerala Fibre Optic Network Limited (KFON) has recently received an Infrastructure Provider Category 1 (IP-I) registration certificate from the Department of Telecommunications. The announcement was made by Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan on Twitter.

Vijayan added that this will enable KFON to bridge the digital divide. KFON will obtain internet service provider (ISP) license and kick start operations in the near future.

IP-I registered companies provide assets such as Dark Fibre, Right of Way, Duct Space, and Tower. There is no license issued for IP-I with companies merely required to be registered with DoT.

KFON is Kerala’s prestigious project aimed at providing internet connectivity for free to around 20 lakh BPL families and at subsidised rates for the rest. The company had planned installation of 2600 km optical ground wire.
