In a big blow for Bangladesh, their bowling duo of Taskin Ahmed and Arafat sunny has been handed suspensions from bowling in international cricket on Saturday (19 March). Sunny and Taskin had gone through bowling assessments in Chennai last week, after they were reported for suspect actions during their T20 WC, 2016 qualifying match against Netherlands.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) confirmed the announced development through a media release. It read: "Independent assessments have found the bowling actions of Arafat Sunny and Taskin Ahmed to be illegal and, as such, both the bowlers have been suspended from bowling in international cricket with immediate effect.

"Arafat's analysis revealed that the elbow extension for majority of his deliveries had exceeded the 15 degrees' level of tolerance permitted under the ICC Regulations, while not all of Taskin's deliveries were legal," the release added.

The pair will, however, be allowed to play in domestic cricket, but they must do so with the Bangladesh Cricket Board's approval.

ESPNCricinfo reported that the duo has been replaced by Saqlain Sajib and Shuvagata Hom.

Bangladesh want ICC to lift ban on Taskin

Having suffered massive setbacks during their ICC World T20 2016 campaign following the suspensions to fast bowler Taskin Ahmed and left-arm spinner Arafat Sunny, Bangladesh have launched an appeal asking the International Cricket Council to lift the suspension on the pacer. The pair was suspended from bowling in international cricket after their actions were found faulty during Bangladesh's qualifying match against the Netherlands in Dharamsala on March 9.

While Sunny's elbow extension for the majority of his deliveries exceeded the 15-degree limit, not all of Taskin's balls were found to be legal, the International Cricket Council (ICC) said while announcing their suspensions.

"We are not convinced about Taskin as of now. We don't have any reason to be satisfied with the report," Bangladesh Cricket Board president Nazmul Hassan told reporters. "And that's disappointing, so we have appealed to the ICC. They are going to sit down with a team of legal experts and will inform us of their decision as soon as possible."

Bangladesh, who came through the qualifiers to reach the Super 10 stage, lost to Pakistan in their opening Group Two match last Wednesday and next face Australia in Bangalore on Monday. India and New Zealand are the other teams in the pool with the top two advancing to the semi-finals.

Taskin Ahmed suspension upheld by Judicial Commissioner

The International Cricket Council on Wednesday (March 23) announced that Taskin Ahmed's suspension from bowling in international cricket has been upheld, following a review hearing conducted by a Judicial Commissioner.

Taskin was reported as having a suspected illegal bowling action by the match officials in Bangladesh's opening match of the ICC World Twenty20 India 2016 against the Netherlands in Dharamsala on 9 March. He undertook an independent assessment at the ICC-accredited testing centre in Chennai on 15 March. This independent assessment found that some of Taskin's standard deliveries exceeded the permissible level of elbow extension and, as such, his bowling action was found to be illegal and he was suspended from bowling in international cricket with immediate effect.

Taskin exercised his right to request an expeditious review of his case by a Judicial Commissioner. The hearing was conducted on Tuesday by Michael Beloff QC over a tele-conference call that lasted several hours and in which numerous legal challenges were made on behalf of the player. Having carefully considered those arguments and the responses of the ICC, Mr Beloff has now notified all parties concerned of his decision that Taskin's suspension from bowling in international cricket shall be upheld and indicated that a written reasoned decision will be provided in due course.

In the meantime, Taskin may, at any time following appropriate remedial work, apply to the ICC for a re-assessment of his bowling action, which shall be carried out in the same manner as the initial independent assessment. In the event of such re-assessment concluding that Taskin has remedied his bowling action and that his elbow extension is within the permissible level on all of his standard deliveries, his suspension shall be lifted and he shall be permitted to resume bowling in international cricket.

BCB chief lambasts ICC's decision to suspend Taskin Ahmed

Nazmul Hasan, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) President, came down hard on the International Cricket Council's (ICC) decision to slap a bowling suspension on star pacer Taskin Ahmed midway through the ongoing ICC World T20 2016. Taskin, along with left-arm spinner Arafat Sunny, were reported by on-field umpires for suspect actions during the team's qualifier game against Netherlands on March 9 and were subsequently suspended after an independent test at an ICC-accredited testing centre in Chennai.

The development had a cataclysmic effect on Mashrafe Mortaza's side, that went on to lose each of its next two matches to Australia and India in the absence of their strike bowler. Expressing his displeasure over the timing of the suspension, Hasan said it was "sheer injustice" to ban a key player in the middle of an important event like the World T20.

"I think the ICC should rethink its decision against Taskin," Hasan told reporters in Bangladesh on Saturday (March 26). "This is sheer injustice. If there is any setback in Bangladesh cricket, this is it. Bangladesh cricket has been finished."

"Taskin was a major bowler for the team. He is not only the fastest among the Bangladesh bowlers, but also one of the fastest in the whole World T20. He has been playing regularly for Bangladesh for the last two years now. It is hard to accept his suspension," he said.

Taskin's surprise suspension also led to conspiracy theories in Bangladesh with Mustafizur Rahman Khan, a supreme court lawyer, attempting to expose inconsistencies in the process taken to mete out the suspensions. According to the lawyer - the report against Taskin stated concerns over his action while bowling the bouncer. The independent test supposedly required Taskin to bowl nine bouncers, three of which were deemed illegal, leading to suspension. However, according to members of the Bangladeshi management, Taskin only bowled back-of-a-length deliveries and never any bouncers in the said game.

"All my life I knew that a bowler gets suspended if he bowls an illegal delivery in a particular game. But Taskin got suspended despite not having bowled any illegal delivery in that game," Hasan said. "This has happened for the first time in history. So, this is a new learning curve for us., In that a bowler can get suspended in this way. This is something new to us," he said.

The despondent cricket chief said that the selective suspension of Bangladesh's players also raised concerns of a possible vendetta against the rapid rise of Bangladesh cricket. "Everyone knows about it (propaganda against Bangladesh). Let them do all these things to Bangladesh if it makes them happy. We will have to keep on playing under these difficult situations. We have nothing much to say," he said.

"If anyone thinks that I am wrong, they should come and prove me wrong. The ICC still has the opportunity to prove me wrong. The World Cup is still ongoing, let's see if they can suspect two bowlers of any team and suspend them.

"Let them set an example, then I will have nothing to say on Taskin issue. I cannot accept a suspension that has come for no reason and against a key bowler of a team," he said.
