The high-speed Spanish Talgo train clocked a maximum speed of 180 km per hour during its second phase trial run between Mathura and Palwal on Wednesday.

The distance of 84 km was covered in just 38 minutes; it presently takes over 90 minutes to cover than distance. The speed of 180 km/hour attained by Talgo is the maximum reached by any train on Indian tracks, leaving behind the Gatiman Express that travels at 160 km/hour between Delhi and Agra.

“It is a big achievement and an encouragement towards the aim of having high-speed trains possible on our railway tracks,” said Dilip Kumar Singh, additional railway manager of Agra division of North Central Railways.

The Talgo coaches attained its highest speed so far between Bhuteshwar and Rundhi stations, he added. “This trial was with empty coaches. In the days ahead, we would conduct trial with filled coaches.”

The ongoing phase two of the trial for light-weight and energy efficient Talgo train began on Saturday (between Mathura and Palwal). Hauled by an Indian 4500 HP engine, the train achieved a top speed of 120 km/hour that day.

Railway officials said over 20 trials will be conducted till July 31 under different conditions for practical testing of track-worthiness.

This Mathura-Palwal journey of the nine coaches of Talgo is being undertaken under the supervision of officials from the Research Designs and Standard Organisation and a Spanish team.

In the first phase of the trial run, the train had clocked a speed of 85-115 km/hour between Bareilly and Moradabad. The Talgo coaches comprise of two executive class cars, four chair cars, a cafeteria, a power car and a tail-end car.
