Veteran Black Cap pacer Chris Martin has said that youngster Tim Southee has the ability to become one of the finest fast bowlers in the history of New Zealand cricket.

Southee made his international debut three years ago and has made massive strides over the past 12 months, which was illustrated at the Cricket World Cup this year when he finished as the third leading wicket taker at the tournament with 18 scalps.

Martin said he had been blown away by Southee's rapid development. Martin believed Southee was someone who was destined for big things in the coming years if he kept working hard, stuff.co.nz reports.

"He's made a huge amount of improvement over the last year and is just at the beginning of a fine career. I can't really see any problems with him physically. He's going to be able to play as much cricket as he wants. It's all going to be about drive. He's going to be one of our finest," Martin said.

At 36 years old, Martin is at the opposite end of his playing career and sits on 199 test cricket wickets for his country.

He has been regarded as a test match specialist, playing 61 tests since his debut against South Africa in 2000, and will be looking to bring up the special milestone of 200 test wickets when New Zealand tour Zimbabwe in October.
