Sony has announced a new 22.5-megapixel camera image sensor IMX318 which comes with Hybrid auto-focus and 3-axis electronic image stabilization. This new camera sensor is likely to be equipped in smartphones that will be released in second half of the year.

Sony’s camera sensors are used by most smartphone vendors including Samsung’s Galaxy line and Apple’s iPhone among others. Now, Sony’s camera division has taken wraps off a new IMX318 CMOS Exmor RS sensor for smartphones with a host of built-in features, more megapixels and relatively smaller dimensions. Touted as one of its kind, the new sensor comes with a stacked design, 3-axis electronic image stabilization and built-in Hybrid auto focus.
In terms of resolution, the IMX318 gets a modest bump to 22.5-megapixels compared to its predecessor IMX230’s 20-megapixels. And despite the increase in resolution, the new sensor is thinner and smaller with diagonal measurement of just 6.86 millimeters. Besides the tiny dimensions, the sensor can handle 4K recording at 30fps, slow motion video in full HD (1080p) at 120fps and at 240 fps in HD (720p) resolution.
