With an aim to increase market share globally and in India, open source solutions and infrastructure vendor Red Hat today unveiled Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 6 for the Indian market.

The new version is an upgrade of the vendor’s earlier version 5, which was chiefly aimed at virtualization. With the new upgrade, Red Hat is planning to take on Microsoft and Unix, and will offer customers a foundation for virtualized and cloud computing platforms.
Joel Berman, Vice President, Global Marketing at Red Hat in an interview to CRN said that RHEL 6 is more scalable and more flexible. “RHEL 6 can match the hardware requirement of the next five to 10 years. It can do 100TB and can work with 4,000 CPUs. By connecting multiple power saving units working as silos into one unit, it can reduce power consumption by 20 percent. Essentially, the new version provides immunity from future changes.”
On the claim that RHEL 6 will provide the vendor with an edge over Microsoft and Unix, Berman said, “We won’t put Microsoft out of business anytime soon. But we see the Microsoft share eroding. A number of companies are saying that they want their blades on Linux. Pricewise, the traditional proprietary model is more expensive. Licenses come at a cost and the services cost extra. Red Hat works like a magazine subscription. You can cancel the subscription and the access to resources goes away, but the software still remains with you. We buy the best and put the best, and therefore customers pay for value in subscriptions.”
He said that the channel will be an integral part of Red Hat even with the new upgrade. “According to our global strategy, the channel fulfills 30 percent to 40 percent of Red Hat business. For RHEL 6, we are training and educating our channel and asking them to customize their software offering for the cloud. Cloud adoption will not happen overnight. It is a long process. Vendors would work with their partners for software requirements, and as more and more customers would enter the cloud, the need for customized software would increase. This would present the channel partners with a great opportunity. In fact, we are telling the channel that with RHEL 6, we have an operating system that is ready to take on Microsoft and Unix and that is your USP. We are asking the channel to up their sales skills and the challenge is to bundle the solutions so that we can upsell and cross sell.”
The annual premium support RHEL 6 Server comes for $1299, the Standard Support for $799 and the Self Support for $349.
Red Hat has strategic partnership with Ingram Micro in India. Integra Micro and G.T. Enterprises are two other distributors. Over all, the vendor has about 700 channel partners or which 10 percent are active and 20 percent are very active. “We want to activate all our channel partners,” said Berman.
