Reliance Jio ahead of Airtel in wireless broadband subscribers in November: Trai

Reliance Jio overtook market leader
Bharti Airtel with the highest number of wireless broadband users in November 2016, the telecom regulator said in a report on Wednesday.

Telecom Regulatory Authority of India in its report said that while Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Jio had 52.23 million subscribers in November last year, Bharti Airtel had 41.90 million subscribers in the same period. In October, however, Bharti Airtel led among the wireless broadband service providers with 46.22 million subscribers.

Overall wired and wireless broadband service share at the end of November 2016 was highest for Reliance Jio at 23.9% followed by Bharti Airtel and Vodafone at 20.1% and 15.9% respectively.

Jio​ launched its telecom operations on September 5 and offered free voice and data services its for users till December 31, 2016, in a bid to capture the market. This free offer in December was further extended to March 31, 2017.

BSNL held the highest market share in the wired broadband service provider base with 9.95 million susbcribers in November 2016. The number of broadband subscribers slightly declined from 218.42 million at the end of October 2016 to 218.26 million by end of November with a monthly decline rate of 0.07%
More than 16 million new users were added to Mukesh Ambani led Reliance Jio Infocomm's network in November, far ahead of market leader Bharti Airtel which added a million subscribers in the same period. Jio's user base is around 80 million now.

In November, number two telco Vodafone India added 0.9 million users while the third largest player Idea Cellular gained 2.5 million, the report said.

Bharti Airtel is No 1 player in India with market share of 23.95% against 24.32% last month by user base, followed by Vodafone at 18.44% and Idea at 17.07%. Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. had 8.71% share of the market, the dominant one among PSUs – MTNL has only 0.33% share among an over billion phone users. Reliance Jio's market share stood at 4.72% at end of November 2016.

​​The report also pointed out that Tata Teleservices lost 1.1 million subscribers in November while Reliance Communication lost 156,187 subscribers.

According to the Trai report, total wireless subscriber base increased from 1,078.42 million at the end of October 2016 to 1,099.51 million at the end of November, registering a monthly growth rate of 1.96%.

The wireless subscription in urban areas increased from 621.77 million at the end of October to 638.46 million at the end of November 2016, while that in rural areas also increased from 456.66 million to 461.05 million during the same period, with monthly growth rates of urban and rural wireless subscription of 2.68% and 0.96% respectively.

Delhi recorded the highest teledensity of 236.38 whereas the lowest was recorded in Bihar at 56.91.

In northern and western India, the highest requests for mobile number portability has been received in Rajasthan followed by Gujarat, while in southern and eastern India, it has been received in Karnataka followed by Andhra Pradesh.

Wireline subscriber base declined from 24.52 million from the end of October 2016 to 24.44 million by the end of October 2016. BSNL and MTNL, the two PSU access service providers, held 70.66% of the market share. Bharti Airtel saw the highest additions in the subscriptions in the wireline market share while BSNL saw a decline of 86,964 users.

Net decline in the wireline subscriber base was 0.07 million with a monthly decline rate of 0.3%. The shares of urban and rural subscribers in total wireline subscribers were 84.14% and 15.86% respectively at the end of November 2016.

The number of telephone subscribers in India increased from 1,102.94 million in October to 1123.96 million in November 2016, a monthly growth rate of 1.91%.
