Before Microsoft reached out to Nokia to offer to buy the Finnish company's devices business, Nokia was already experimenting with Google's Android operating system on its Nokia phones, says Nick Wingfield in New York Times' Bits blog.

When Nokia had back in 2011 decided to ride on Windows for its smartphone revival, it had the option of opting out in late 2014 and according to the report, a team at Nokia had Android up and running on Lumia handsets much before the negotiations with Microsoft started.

Nokia had to face some criticism for choosing Windows over the more popular Andriod operating system for its new smartphones. Though Nokia's Lumia devices have received positive reviews, none of its models have been runaway successes and the company that was once the undisputed leader in mobile phones continued to struggle to revive its fortunes.

Had Nokia actually switched to Android, it would have been a major setback for Microsoft's mobile plans as Nokia accounts for over 80 per cent of Windows Phone sales.

Microsoft and Nokia announced that the American software giant was buying Nokia's mobile phone business for 5.44 billion euros ($7.2 billion) earlier this month. Nokia CEO Stephen Elop, would join Microsoft when the transaction closed.

Now that Microsoft is acquiring Nokia, the Android plans in all likelihood, have been already shelved.
