Mozilla Firefox OS Dev Launched

Mozilla last week released a test version of Firefox OS, to help developers get some quality time with the new mobile OS and test their apps, before it is released to the general public. The early desktop version is available for Linux, Mac, and Windows users.

First introduced as Boot to Gecko last year, Mozilla unveiled its mobile OS at MWC this year, before renaming it to the Firefox OS earlier this month. Mozilla had at the time announced that TCL Communication Technology and ZTE will be Firefox OS’ first manufacturing partners.

The first Qualcomm Snapdragon-based Firefox OS devices are expected to launch in early 2013, with operators across the world, such as Telefónica's Vivo, Deutsche Telekom, Etisalat, Smart, Sprint, Telecom Italia, and Telenor, announcing their support for the new OS.

Writing about the new test version of Firefox OS, Mozilla’s Tony Chung said:

"We've been culturally challenged to build up an interested community of testers, but limited to our distribution of builds due to legal contracts. However, the release engineering team was able to get Daily desktop builds created and published online for anyone to play with."

"If you're a web developer, you can use these builds to create and test your webApp against," Chung added, "If you're looking to help do some testing, these desktop builds will also give you an immediate opportunity to play with and help us write testplans and file bugs. We encourage anyone interested to give the desktop builds a spin."

Detailed setup instructions for the early desktop version of Firefox OS are currently available on the Gaia/Hacking site. For more details, refer to Chung's blog post.

ZTE to roll out smartphones powered by Mozilla OS-Report

Chinese telecommunications equipment maker ZTE is planning to tie up to roll out smartphones using a mobile operating system it developed with Mozilla, , maker of web browser Firefox, according to media reports.

According Wall Street Journal, The move is part of ZTE's plan to diversify away from Google Inc's Android and Microsoft Corp's Windows into other operating systems. Smartphone market leader Apple Inc is embroiled in legal disputes with some handset makers running Android.

The company will also launch smartphones using Microsoft Corp.'s MSFT -0.11% Windows Phone 8 operating system at the end of this year or early next year, said ZTE Executive Vice President He Shiyou said at a press briefing on Wednesday.

"We are trying to increase our efforts in coming up with our own operating system, while introducing products based on Android," said ZTE spokesman David Dai Shu.

ZTE to launch Firefox OS phones this year

ZTE plans to roll out low cost smartphones based on Firefox OS. Currently the company sells phones with Android and Windows Phone OS.

China based mobile handset vendor ZTE will introduce a new mobile operating system later this year or early next year. ZTE, while announcing this, added that the OS has been developed in association with Mozilla, the maker of Firefox web browser.
However, it is not clear if this new operating system will be the same as the Firefox operating system which Mozilla has announced or whether it will be a different version specially designed for ZTE.
The confusion comes from a statement by ZTE spokesman David Dai Shu who said, "We are trying to increase our efforts in coming up with our own operating system, while introducing products based on Android."

Mozilla had earlier said that its mobile operating system has support from network operators like Deutsche Telekom, Sprint, Smart, Telecom Italia, Telenor and Etisalat.
If indeed ZTE gets its own OS made with Mozilla's help, it will fragment Firefox OS even before the platform is launched.
ZTE currently sells smartphones based on Android operating system and also has a few phones based on the Windows Phone operating system from Microsoft.
ZTE doesn't sell its own branded phones. Rather, its handsets are sold by operators under their own brand name. ZTE, however, has confirmed to The Mobile Indian that it plans to launch ZTE-branded phones in the Indian market soon and it is in the planning stages for the launch.
