It’s all but confirmed that Xiaomi will be unveiling its much-rumored Mi Note 2 later this month on October 25 . The first generation Mi Note was launched in January last year and it has been a long while for its successor to arrive. And if the latest reports are to be believed, the Mi Note 2 could be the most expensive smartphone ever in Xiaomi’s portfolio.

As per what we have heard so far, Xiaomi will be launching the Mi Note 2 in three variants — 64GB, 128GB and 256GB. While the base model will have a full HD display and 4GB of RAM, the top-of-the-line 256GB variant is expected to feature 6GB of RAM and a QHD resolution display. An image has surfaced online courtesy of AndroidPure , which is said to be a part of Xiaomi’s launch presentation. This slide claims that the top-end Mi Note 2 will be priced at RMB 5,699, which is approximately $845 or Rs 56,453. If this turns out to be true, Xiaomi is finally entering the space where you usually find flagship devices from Samsung, Apple and now even Google.

Based on various leaks and rumors, the Xiaomi Mi Note 2 does seem to have what it takes to compete against flagship devices in the premium price range. On the design front, the company is opting for a mixture of metal and glass, and one of the talking points will be the front panel. While some leaked photos hint at a Samsung Galaxy Note 7-like dual-curved edge display, recent photos suggest that the Mi Note 2 could instead feature an almost bezel-less display. The leaked photos remind us of the recently unveiled Sharp Aquos Crystal, which features an all-top display, pushing the sensors, earpiece and selfie camera below the capacitive touch buttons. It is difficult to say which among the two is the real deal, and it would be safe to wait till the end of the month.

Leaks suggest that the Mi Note 2 will flaunt a 5.7-inch Super AMOLED display. The displays on the 64GB and 128GB variants are expected to feature full HD (1920×1080 pixels) resolution, while the top-end 256GB variant is expected to come with QHD resolution display. Under the hood is expected to be Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 821 quad-core chipset.

For photography lovers, the Mi Note 2 is expected to be equipped with a pair of 16-megapixel cameras at the back. This will be the third Xiaomi smartphone to boast dual-camera setup at the back, after the Redmi Pro and Mi 5s Plus. There is however no word on whether the camera’s functionality will be akin to the Redmi Pro or the Mi 5s Plus that uses Qualcomm’s ClearSight technology. For selfie lovers, the smartphone is expected to come with a 5-megapixel snapper.

The rest of the features expected on the Mi Note 2 include a 4,000mAh battery along with Quick Charge 3.0 support, an Ultrasonic fingerprint scanner and connectivity options like dual-SIM card slots, 4G with VoLTE HD voice calling support, NFC, GPS Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi 802.11ac. On the software front, the smartphone could run Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow-based MIUI 8. That said, there are a couple of rumors that suggest the smartphone could run on Android Nougat 7.0-based MIUI 9 out-of-the-box.

The Mi Note 2 is already under mass production, and Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun recently hinted that the smartphone will ‘come with a surprise’. Now there’s no word on what that surprise exactly is, and all we can do at the moment is wait for the launch event on October 25. While the talk is about the Mi Note 2 being the most expensive device in Xiaomi’s lineup, the starting price is expected to be around RMB 4,000, which is approximately Rs 39,800.
