Developer Chris Lacy has just released a big update to Action Launcher, which should be rolling out in the Play Store as we speak. The update, which brings Action Launcher up to version 3.6, brings a handy new Quickfind feature, a number of new home screen transition effects, and much more.

For starters, though, Quickfind is the headline feature in the version 3.6 update. It allows you swipe up (or double tap) the All Apps icon to perform a quick search of your app drawer. Your keyboard will pop up right away, and you can instantly begin typing out the name of the app you’re looking for.

The most recent version of the Google Now Launcher also lets you search for apps, but Action Launcher’s implementation is much quicker. For instance, a swipe up in Action Launcher is much faster that a long press in the Google Now Launcher. Plus, you can press the keyboard’s enter button to automatically open the first app on your list, which should come in handy. You can even use a T9 keyboard for performing a quick search with Quickfind.

Version 3.6 ushers in Google’s new colorful logo in the Search bar, but you can choose to keep the standard non-colorful variant if you so choose. There are also 12 new home screen transition effects to choose from, complete with previews in the selection menu so you don’t have to keep jumping to your home screen to test them out. It’s the little things.

There are many more changes that come along with this update, which you can find at this link. If you’re interested in grabbing the latest version, follow the Play Store link.

Chris Lacy is the man. I embarrassingly told him that at last year’s I/O party, but when a developer can take something as brand new as the leaked Nexus Launcher and in two and a half days release a beta of Action Launcher 3 that incorporates all those new features on top of the already impressive functionality of AL3, then that man deserves all the praise he receives.

Lacy has added the slide-up app drawer and caret (little arrow) above the semi-transparent dock. The date widget appears (but it is movable in AL3 and not part of a screen-width block like on the Nexus Launcher), and you can also add the Google ‘pill’ button on its own or as part of the date widget.

You can still use AL3’s covers and shutters in the dock, but obviously a swipe up gesture will launch the app drawer instead, so you’ll have to reverse your cover/shutter swipe direction. QuickTheme and QuickPage work fine with the Nexus Launcher features, but for obvious reasons you don’t have Google Now integration in AL3.

You’ll need to enrol in the beta testers group for AL3 (available on the Google Play page below) and you’ll have to own AL3 plus ($4.99) to enable the Nougat-style features. Lacy has already fixed a few bugs and promises more features and improvements will be made in the coming weeks.

In recent weeks, Chris Lacy has been working hard to bring as many of the new Android 7.0 Nougat features to Action Launcher as quickly as possible. At the beginning of October, Action Launcher was updated to bring Quickcuts (a version of 7.1’s app shortcuts) before Android 7.1 was even available to the public. When they were introduced, Quickcuts was a Plus-only feature, meaning you’d need to pay a premium to take advantage of the handy feature. But now the developer has released a new update that not only brings Quickcuts to all, but also implements even more Pixel Launcher features.

After updating to the latest version, you’ll be able to take advantage of Quickcuts whether you’ve bought the full version of the app or not. If you haven’t paid the small fee for the full version yet, though, you should definitely consider it. Chris Lacy has been releasing a steady stream of notable updates to Action Launcher for some time now, and that likely won’t stop anytime soon.

There are a few other enhancements in this update worth talking about. If you’re not a fan of Google’s new circular icons in Android 7.1, now you have the option to switch to a global icon style. Action Launcher now also mimics the final Pixel Launcher All Apps drawer, and supports new shortcuts to automatically open the keyboard when opening the All Apps drawer. Oh, and the settings menu has gotten a makeover to include the new Pixel blue color.

There are plenty of other improvements and fixes in this update. If you’re interested, head to the developer’s Google+ page for the full changelog. Head to the Play Store link below to grab the latest version!

iOS widget stacks are available on Android via Action Launcher.

Widget stacks are a solution to widget overload and disorganization on your homescreen. Instead of placing multiple widgets with various designs and colors, knowing you only need them intermittently, you stack them on top of each other and simply swipe between them vertically, keeping your homescreen clean. The feature has been implemented in the same manner on Action Launcher.
