In 2018 RCB's case: 17+ 11+ 3
I did mention Kohli got paid more, but the pattern they followed for retention was 15-11-3 because it had the Uncapped player as 3rd..
Coming to RR's case, the slabs doesn't cover the uncapped players
That's the point, then how in 2018 RCB had to go for the 15-11-3 combo rather than 12.5-8.5-3 combo which would have had only 2 capped players, like how RR did today with the 14-10-4 slab combo instead of 15-11-4.
So, for example, SRH picked just Williamson for 14 cr and two uncapped for 4cr cr slabs
Same applies for srh too. Despite having 3 players, only 14cr is getting deducted from Williamson slot rather than 15..
This is the one clause that was very well understood and utilised by RR from the early years..
The earlier years never had a preferential retention quota based on the number of players retained. This BS was introduced only in 2018 mega auction.

The first two retentions were always paid ~$2M and ~1.5M in 2011 and 12.5,9.5 in 2014 unless it's an Uncapped player.
If Kohli and Abd had agreed for 12.5 & 8 crores back then they would have received the same treatment as well
I don't think it's about more money for both in 2018, but about slots because RCB was the only team with an Uncapped retention that year. Something must have changed for this year's auction retention rules..

The rules are actually changing based on the evolution of the auction process.. In 2011 Retentions, there wasn't any salary cap for retentions, they can pay how much ever they want but IPL would have cut out a fixed amount irrespective of the price payed.. Then came the 2014 Retentions which had put out a salary caps in place but teams were allowed to pay excess which wasn't put in the purse... Then in 2018, the rules evolved be it right or wrong to give a luxary for the teams who don't have any system in place like KXIP to perform better imo... The same was maintained this time as well... But RR had utilised the uncapped clause better by general is what I had meant... I still do believe it was the case of Kohli and Ab quoting higher salaries is what caused franchise to put out more...

That being said, unless and until if there any new teams coming to play, this should be the last IPL Mega Auction... The teams which had groomed talents and had got certain stature with them are loosing them out because of the teams like KXIP who doesn't have any backend systems working properly and for whom talent doesn't want to play for unless they have no choice... May be there should be a periodical auctions for overseas talent, but franchises should invest in Indian talent in much better ways.. Only some like KKR are having the Academy situations now and very few top teams are actually scouting for the talents...

If IPL is set to become a three month tournament form a 6 week tournament many such changes are required to sustain the league.. Being a 10 team affair requires a lot more quality Indian talent and if that cannot be achieved, there will be serious issues then. Even last season we did see many one sided matches.. If a team has a 1 or 2 bad days it's understandable, but how SRH, RR and KXIP were struggling wasn't great.. Hope next season won't be that bad...
