The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reportedly sought help from Test captain Virat Kohli to choose between Anil Kumble and Ravi Shastri as the next head coach. The board is likely to make a decision by Wednesday.

The Cricket Advisory Committee, comprising Sourav Ganguly, VVS Laxman and Sachin Tendulkar interviewed the six shortlisted candidates in Kolkata on Tuesday and now have to pick a clear winner.

"Kohli will have to send his recommendation to the Board by Wednesday," a source close to BCCI told India Today.

Kumble, Shastri, Praveen Amre, Lalchand Rajput, Tom Moody and Stuart Law - made presentations and showcased their blueprint for the future, it ultimately boiled down to just two: Kumble and Shastri. And going into the final round, Kumble seems to have left the field behind.

Two questions posed by the committee were the most critical. They asked each of the six (a) Why should you be given the team and (b) How will you help them win abroad? Kumble was both methodical and persistent and the fact that it was his era at the turn of Millennium that reversed the old Indian tradition of 'winning at home and losing abroad', Kumble is all but home. It is no co-incidence that Kumble played in Indian cricket's Golden Period with Ganguly, Tendulkar and Laxman.

Sources said Kumble's was the longest presentation as well and he spelt different blueprint for different formats. He has mentored Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League besides being chairman of ICC's Cricket Committee and BCCI's Technical Committee.

Shastri made his presentation via video conference from Thailand and harped upon the 20-odd months he spent with the team. While the Test team did well without being spectacular, the ODI and T20 team didn't quite live up to the promise during his time, failing to go beyond semifinals of the World Cup 2015 and the World T20 this year. He has the backing of Test captain Kohli but India Today learns at least two of the three CAC members are more inclined towards Kumble, besides a couple of very influential officials within the BCCI.
