Idea Cellular has conducted trials of massive Mimo , said its officials at the IMC2017 conclave. The Kumar Mangalam Birla owned company also said that it has 64,000 4G sites and plans to get one lakh 4G sites soon.
Massive Mimo, or massive multiple input multiple output, increases capacity of a base station by five to seven times and reduces interference substantially, in turn boosting the transmission signal to the devices. This means that a subscriber using voice and data, will get data speed which can be between 30 Mbps and 35 Mbps on average and even up to 50 Mbps in peak times. Comparatively, depending on one’s 4G plan, the mobile internet speed varies from 4 Mbps to 16 Mbps on paper.
Idea will have competition from market leader Bharti AirtelBSE -0.50 % since the No 1 carrier is planning to deploy Massive Mimo technology in key cities in India as well.
ET had reported earlier that Airtel has started its Mimo trials in Bengaluru, Manesar and Chandigarh and market leader may start commercial roll out of the technology, considered to be more efficient than 4G but pre-5G, between December 2017 and February 2018. This technology will help them both telcos to take the speed battle head on with Reliance Jio Infocomm (Jio).

Nokia bags optical transport technology contract from Idea Cellular
Nokia is deploying Nokia’s 1830 Photonic Services Switch (PSS) based Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) solution to address bandwidth needs. Once the technology is deployed, Idea will be able to provide high-bandwidth services to its subscribers.
“With the roll-out of Idea’s pan-India wireless broadband network in the last one year, we have witnessed massive data growth leading to high bandwidth demand. We have a long standing partnership with Nokia and we are confident that Nokia will bring the same expertise and commitment in deploying optical network as it does in Radio, Core and IP domains. This collaboration marks a new phase in our relationship, and we look forward to leveraging Nokia’s strength in optical network domain to meet our requirement," Anil Tandan, Chief Technology Officer, at Idea Cellular, said.
