Idea Cellular , the country’s third-largest phone company, replicated market leader Bharti Airtel ’s dramatic decision by announcing two similarly priced mass-market prepaid, bucket packs combining free voice calls bundled with 4G data to take on 4G entrant, Reliance Jio Infocomm.

Late Thursday evening, a senior company executive told ET that Idea would unveil two mass-market bucket plans, with 28-days validity, offering free voice calls nationally bundled with 300 MB and 1 GB of 4G data respectively for prepaid customers subscribing to its Rs 148 and Rs 348 packs.

Idea's prepaid plans are a close variant of Airtel's twin prepaid packs -- priced at Rs 145 and Rs 345 -- unveiled earlier in the day.

Like Airtel, Idea prepaid users opting for the base Rs 148 pack can make free STD calls only on the company’s own networks, while those opting for the higher Rs 348 pack can make free STD calls to any network across India.

Airtel and Idea’s aggressive bucket plan announcements appear designed to take some of the sheen off Reliance Jio’s entry-level Rs 149 and Rs 299 bucket plans that also offer free voice calls bundled with dollops of 4G data.
