Huawei is banking on building its own mobile OS, and wants to redesign its current EMUI so that it looks less like a poor copy of Apple’s iOS.

A report on the Information (subscriber access only) points out Huawei has now hired former Apple designer Abigail Brody in order “to change the look of its smartphone software skin.”

The report also points out “Huawei skin has been criticised… as ripping off elements of the iPhone, such as the way the app icons look.” According to Information, “Huawei is also secretly developing an alternative mobile operating system, according to three people briefed about the project.”

The Verge , points out quoting from Information that Huawei has a team working on the mobile OS in Scandinavia, and it includes ex-Nokia employees as well, but the OS “isn’t far along.” What is more urgent are changes to the EMUI.

EMUI looks more like iOS, with a control centre at the bottom that users can swipe up, no app tray and icons quite similar to iOS. Huawei wants to revamp the EMUI skin, and will launch the new version in September which will have an app drawer, redesigned icons and “‘very clean, fresh’ colour palette,” according to the Information.

Huawei ranked as the third largest smartphone vendor in the world in Q1 2016, according to IDC data. Huawei also manufactured the Google Nexus 6P, which helped boost the brand’s image according to the research firm.

Huawei, which has most of its sales in China, is looking to expand globally. In India, the company launched the new Honor 5C at a price of Rs 10,999 to compete with the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3, Le 2.
