Come January 1, 2018, debit card transactions are going to pinch a little less. To give a fillip to digital payments, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced on Wednesday that it will rationalise the framework for merchant discount rate (MDR) applicable on debit card transactions.

Merchant Discount Rate on e-transactions up to Rs 2000 to be borne by govt - Times of India

In a bid to boost digital payments, the government on Friday decided to reimburse the MDR (Merchant Discount Rate) on selected modes of e-payment. Briefing the media, IT and Law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said that the MDR applicable on all debit card, BHIM UPI and AePS (Aadhaar enabled Payment System) transactions up to a value of Rs 2,000 will be borne by the government for 2 years with effect from 1 January, 2018.
