Google is reportedly testing a new feature that will give users an option to download files using WiFi only. Android Police put out screenshots of the new feature, which is only available for a few users currently. Google’s new feature will show users a dialogue box while attempting to download a large file from the Play Store using mobile data.
The box says, “This app is very large. To avoid potential delays or extra data usage charges, use Wi-Fi only.” It also gives users an option to set ‘Download using Wi-Fi only’ as their default option. Otherwise, the dialogue box provides users with two options – Download Now and Wait for WiFi. It seems Google is only testing the feature as it has only been rolled out for a small group of people. Also, the ‘Beta’ warning is clearly visible in the screenshot. Google currently puts out a warning to switch to a WiFi connection only when a file is larger than 100MB. It’s still unclear at what file size the new dialogue box is slated to appear.
Google, recently rolled out new offline features – SD card support and WiFi only mode – for Android that allows users to save data on-the-go. Also, users can choose to save on mobile data by taking Google Maps completely offline. Once the WiFi mode is switched on, Google Maps app will work offline, even without WiFi. While the app significantly relies on WiFi, it might still use a small amount of cellular data.
