After releasing the Android 7.1 Nougat Developer Preview last month, Google has now released the Developer Preview 2 for compatible Nexus devices. The update is available for the Nexus 5X and the Nexus 6P smartphones, and the Pixel C tablet. Google has also added compatibility for the Nexus 9 tablet, something that was missing from the previous version. Google has mentioned that it is the last Developer Preview release before it starts official rollout of Android 7.1.1 next month.

“Android 7.1.1 includes the developer features already available on Pixel and Pixel XL devices and adds optimizations and bug fixes on top of the base Android 7.1 platform,” Google VP of engineering, Dave Burke wrote in a blog post . While the previous update brought Pixel-exclusive features such as image keyboards and app shortcuts, details about changelog of new release are scarce at the moment. Currently, the update is only available for the those who have enrolled for Android Beta program. Let’s look at how to install the latest Developer Preview version of Android 7.1 Nougat on your compatible Nexus device.

Over-the-air (OTA): The update is meant for developers to try out the new version and get their apps ready before Google releases the public version. So, before you install the update on your Nexus smartphone, it is important to understand that it may come with a few bugs that may hinder overall performance of your smartphone. If you’re all set, the update process is quite simple. All you need to do is sign-up for Android Beta Program using the Google ID that you’ve used on your smartphone. If you own a compatible device, you will get a link to enroll for the beta program.

Once that is done, you should receive a prompt on your smartphone within 24 hours to download the OTA update. In case you have previously installed the Android Nougat Developer Preview, you can head over to Settings > About > Update to download the latest build.

Using factory images: Alternatively, you can also download the factory images from here , and manually install the update on your compatible Nexus smartphone or tablet. After downloading the factory image (.ZIP) file, rename it to something simple, such as nexus5x.zip . Before flashing the factory images, it will be a good idea to take complete backup of your content including messages, contacts, photos and more.

Once you’ve taken the backup, download Minimal ADB and Fastboot from here and install it on your PC. To make things easier, select the directory as ‘Desktop’ during installation. You will also need to install latest Google USB drivers for your device, which you can grab from here .

On your device, head over to Settings > About Phone > and tap for 7-8 times on Build Number. This will unlock Developer Options on your device. Under Developer Options, enable USB Debugging and connect your device to the PC using the data cable. Next, reboot your device into Recovery Mode. To do this, turn off the device, then press and hold volume down + power button and connect to PC using data cable. You may see a prompt to ‘allow USB debugging,’ just tap on OK.

Now, open the ‘Minimal ADB and Fastboot’ on the desktop and in the command prompt window type – adb sideload <factory zip file name> and hit enter. For instance, it will could be something like – adb sideload nexus5x.zip. If everything goes right, the update will be installed and your smartphone and it will reboot to the new Android Nougat OS.
