File sharing between devices is nothing new. Especially with today’s apps and technology there are many ways to share files between devices and for that matter, between devices of different platforms like Android devices, PCs and iOS devices among others. You can do this through a number of different applications. Sharing information or data between devices without these apps though, more specifically cross platform between a device running Android and a device running iOS is another story. Google may be about to change all that with the possible announcement of a new service that allows for inter-device communication between iOS and Android devices called Copresence.

The best way to think about Copresence is to think about the way that Android Beam works. Android Beam was a way for Android devices that had embedded NFC chips to share files and data between eachother through the Near Field Communication standard. It was introduced back in Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Just like Android devices today can share data to other nearby Android devices using Android Beam, it sounds like Copresence aims to do the same thing but for Android to iOS, or iOS to Android. Android Police reported about a potential upcoming service from Google called Nearby back in June, which would let other people with Android devices(presumably those in your Google contacts or Google+ circles)know when you were nearby.

While the whole of Copresence is still very much a mystery, its existence is not as we can see. Sharing files has honestly never been easier with all the tools that we have at our disposal, but sharing a file to drive and then allowing the person you want to share it with be a collaborator on the folder is still slower than sharing something through a service like Android Beam.

Unfortunately sharing things through the cloud is the fastest conceivable way to do things if you’re sharing data or your location with someone that’s using an iPhone or iPad, as there is no Android Beam like service that brings the two platforms together. With Copresence, perhaps we could see it made possible to share things like locations, files and data of other kinds just by being nearby and initiating/accepting the transfer. Right now there isn’t any detail on when we might hear officially about Copresence from Google, or if that will even be the name when it gets a launch. What are your thoughts?
