Twitter India has introduced a new feature that allows its users to get real-time information about the air pollution levels in their area through a tweet. Twitter India has tied up with India Spend, which describes itself as a “data journalism initiative.” The new feature marks Earth Day 2016, which is today April 22.

To get the real-time information about the air quality, users need to tweet #Breathe followed by the area you want to get the information. For example, you can tweet #Breathe Anand Vihar. Then Twitter sends reverts with tweet showing real-time graphical representation of the data, featuring the PM and Air Quality Index (AQI) levels and how much impact will it have on your health.

Do note that this service is only available for Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore. But Twitter promises to roll out this service for other cities in India a well. On its blog, Twitter points out that the World Health Organization’s list as of December 2014 which says 13 out of 20 most polluted cities worldwide are in India. The list includes cities like Patna, Gwalior, Raipur and Ahmadabad among others.

“Pollution levels across India are rising and is a huge health issue affecting millions of people. By leveraging India Spend’s air-quality monitoring network, Twitter is democratizing access to live air pollution data to help Indians make healthier living decisions from Earth Day 2016 and beyond,” said Twitter on its blog post .

While Twitter is among the first to get the information about the air quality in your city, there are a few other alternatives as well. You can download the Indian government’s
SAFAR-Air app, which provides the forecast for air quality and corresponding health advisories in real-time. The app currently provides information for cities like Delhi and Pune. You can download the SAFAR-Air app from here.
Another method is you can go to Delhi Pollution Control Committee’s Air Data website , where you can check out air quality in the national capital. Also, you can visit Earth Day 2016: Now get real-time updates on air quality in your city with just a tweet | Latest Tech News, Video & Photo Reviews at BGR India to check out air quality in your city.
