The famous Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi has decided to implement a dress code for devotees before they enter the sanctum sanctorum of the temple.

Devotees who want to touch the Jyotirlinga (called sparsh darshan) in the sanctum sanctorum will now have to put on Dhoti-Kurta. Temple administration has taken a decision to this effect after holding a meeting with Kashi Vidvat Parishad (the oldest and most recognised body of city’s Sanskrit Scholars and Vedic experts) on Sunday evening.

Those wearing pants, shirts and jeans will only be able to worship the deity from a distance. They will not be allowed to enter the sanctum.

New rule at Kashi Vishwanath temple in Varanasi, devotees in jeans, t-shirts won’t be able to touch the deity

It is very good decision.
All temples should be like this.
We are Indian so in Temple's we can wear Indian clothes like dhoti, kurta etc. etc.

What a weird decision, We are moving forward with time or actually getting backwards

At a time when courts are giving orders like allowing women entry in Sabrimala, breaking very old traditions and promoting equality, some temple administrations think that they are out of this world.

Is it written somewhere that we need to follow a specific dress code for entering temples? And why this rule mentions about men only?

This has been the norm in many temples in our area in TN that do not come under TN govt. Even lungi and coloured dhoti other than white or saffron aren't allowed!

Many Temples in Kerala also adhere to strict dressing code and it's normalised there. It will take time though
