New Delhi: The Dalai Lama will inaugurate the Centre for Tibetan Studies at the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) and will be conferred an honorary degree next month, an official said on Tuesday.

The event will take place on Sep 5 at the varsity's 24th convocation here.

"His Holiness the Dalai Lama would inaugurate the Tibetan centre and will be awarded the degree of doctor of letters (Honoris Causa)," a varsity official said.

The university, in collaboration with the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India (CBCI), has instituted six new awards for its students pursuing masters in social work and will give away annual cash awards of Rs.5,000 each.

"Around 1.04 lakh students from across the country will receive their degrees on the occasion," said the official.

According to IGNOU, an exhibition will also be organised on the occasion where career counseling will be provided to the students. IANS
