Cabinet approve Constitutional amendment to change name of Pondicherry to Puducherry

The Union Cabinet headed by Prime Miniter Narendra Modi has approved the Constitutional amendment to change the name of Union territory Pondicherry to Puducherry. The cabinet also cleared constitutional amendments to include new castes in Scheduled castes in the state of Odisha.

Further, the name of Union territory of Pondicherry has been changed to Puducherry vide the Pondicherry (Alteration of name) Act, 2006 w.e.f. 01.10.2006. Accordingly, an amendment is needed in the Constitution (Pondicherry) Scheduled Castes Order, 1964 to this effect.
