Byju’s has acquired edtech startup WhiteHat Jr. for $300 million as the Indian online learning giant looks to expand its dominant reach in the country.

The all-cash deal makes 18-month-old Mumbai-headquartered WhiteHat Jr., which offers online coding classes to school-going students in India and the U.S., the fastest exit story at this size in the Indian startup ecosystem.

India’s biggest e-learning startup, Byju’s, is close to signing a deal to acquire rival Toppr Technologies Pvt. in a transaction valued at roughly $150 million, according to a person familiar with the matter.

Toppr provides online learning materials to students in grades 5 through 12 and its backers include SAIF Partners and Helion Ventures. It is the latest target for Byju’s, which has been expanding aggressively in recent months to capture the surge in demand for online education triggered by the pandemic. In January, it agreed a $1 billion deal to acquire brick-and-mortar test prep leader Aakash Educational Services Ltd.

Even Unacademy is buying other edu-tech companies or good youtubers who would provide free course on YouTube and some paid course- they are little better though they may be planning to buy other competitors so that users don't have much free alternative option for prep , thankfully for now they do give free learning option albeit its for promotion of their in YouTube or their plus courses .

I hope other upcoming competitors don't give up that easily - time being there are many small & medium players who teach better in offline or online -Sad reality big start up are continuously trying to buy out most of their competitors/peers to finish competition - if they do succeed in wiping out competitor brands we are heading towards monopoly/Duopoly for sure.

Byju Raveendran has indeed come a long way.I was his student for CAT classes in his early days when he was just known in CAT coaching circles. The guy was very hard working indeed. He used to take Quant Classes for us on Saturdays and then would be flying to various other cities for taking classes where they had just started Byju classes or he would go as a guest lecturer for other CAT coaching centres. He used to take 1 free class for MBA aspirants at the beginning of the MBA prepn. year at Jyoti Nivas College which was like a fair with thousand of aspirants descending down.

No doubt in earlier days or may be they still are good for CAT coaching ,but due to their quick expansion most people are complaining there way of teaching has become worse or they end up teaching and clarifying doubts only in starting trial period off 15 days as people can take refund after 15 day completion they start teaching in casual manner don't clear doubts properly or do only once at weekends . hope they don't end up ruining teaching method in aakash as well and let it run independently .

sadly this move would surely move ed-tech sector in India towards duopoly as other unacademy is also following same acquisition model of their competitors to expand their business in India

India is 1.3billion plus country and our choices are shrinking day by day. Telecom sector, banking sector, edutech all of them merging in the name of consolidation. Only time will tell how this is gonna impact innovation and competition.

consolidation happen for only one reason, mass production upto CERTAIN level give incremental benefit.

just see fragment telco/bank wont work efficiently.

but it risk for monopoly/duopoly and may even slow down innovation.

Govt has o provide more innovation and incubation center apart from large enterprise spending some amount only for R n d.

Govt also has to regulate and make clear and long lasting policies to stop attack and danger of monopoly type situation.

That was always the case with coaching franchises isn't it.Byju's and Unacademy have just taken to a higher level. We had FIIT Jee and Akash in our preparatory days for IIT.Both started as a small center in Delhi and gradually they had footprints all over india.Obviously the one at say Ranchi may not have same quality of teaching say at Delhi. And remember in those days there was no concept of Online classes or teachers flying from one city to another. It was business then also and it is same now to only difference i feel that this has become a business to earn more and more money and profit.
PS:Whitehat Jr. has taken this sh#thousery to another level though claiming to have apps made by 4-5 yr old kids.
