State-run BSNL today announced unlimited calling offer for its pre-paid customers along with limited free data usage amid free call offers from private competitors like Reliance Jio.

"BSNL has introduced unlimited local and STD BSNL to BSNL with 300 MB data for only Rs 99 with validity of 28 days for its prepaid mobile customers," the company said in a statement.

The rate will be applicable in Kolkata TD, West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Assam , Gujrat, MP, Chhattisgarh, and Maharashtra & Rajasthan for within network calls. In other circles the same offer will vary from Rs 119 to 149.

"BSNL has also introduced new combo STV with Unlimited local and STD BSNL to any network with 1GB data for only Rs 339 with validity of 28 days on pan-India basis," the statement said.

BSNL is already offering unlimited 3G service for Rs 1099 with 30 day validity.

"Tariff offered by BSNL are most competitive and is committed to provide affordable and excellent services to our esteemed customers," BSNL Director for Consumer Mobility RK Mittal said.

Earlier in the month, incumbent operators
Bharti Airtel and Idea Cellular made an attempt to match free 4G service of Reliance Jio by launching two identical schemes offering free calls and limited mobile internet use priced at around Rs 150 and Rs 350 with 28 days validity.

Vodafone also launched similar tariff later.

At present, Reliance Jio is offering free 4G mobile service including calls and data till March 31. It has clocked 52 million customers in 83 days.

These plans come close to proposed Rs 149 plan of Reliance Jio under which it will offer free calls to all network in the country for 28 days without any roaming charges. The plan includes 300 MB 4G data access during day and unlimited usage at night.

Besides this, Jio under the proposed plan will offer unlimited use of its music, movie, TV, news and all other apps, video call, SMS for free.

Disappointing. They are also after arpu... no competition to jio yet...
You cannot compete if someone is giving it for free. But you you look closely then for heavy data user operators like Airtel is giving way better deal than Jio.

No plans on Jio give you ₹50/GB without WiFi data which is absent in almost all places all over India but operators like Airtel is giving you true ₹50/GB actually less than ₹50 as airtel is charging ₹494 for 10GB 3G/4G data. [emoji6]

But no use of comparing plans till March, because till then, even if someone gives at ₹1/GB, jio will be cheaper since they are giving for free... Only after March, this comparision will be valid. And jio are slowly increasing their wifi coverage and they plan to make it pan India by March, and if not, they may give another 3 moths free offer (with reduced FUP ofcourse)... And how are the same operators giving plans at such cheap rates now, only after jio entry? Does it not prove that they were looting the customers in broad daylight by charging ₹249/GB 3g?

Jio is not free. Jio is free for those who have VoLTE and 4G phones. For others, it requires a minimum of 2k₹. Most would go with Airtel, Idea, Bsnl rather than spending 2k.

Moreover currently it supports only VoLTE for calls and app calls for non VoLTE phones. It's in developing stage. Whether it's coverage or services.

So current operators have advantages over Jio.

You mean people are still buying 2g phones??? Nothing will happen of such people!! 4g phones have been there in market for more than a year now, I myself bought a 4g phone in January last year...
Yes, because of this, there will be subscribers in old school operators, but majority of them won't be heavy data users, they have more call/sms type users than data users.

And speaking of volte, packet switching is the way forward, and if the old operators had not spent crores on circuit switched infrastructure before, they'd have upgraded to volte too...

Non 4G phones will remain for at least 5 years. But mobile plans for non 4G phones from all operators will be expensive. Look at current trends. Airtel, Idea, Vodafone is giving only 50 MB data to non 4G phones but they are giving 300 MB data with same price for 4G phones. I think it will be extended to more plan. So non 4G users will pay more.
