The three-day festival of Eid-ul-Adha or Bakra Eid will be celebrated in India on Tuesday, September 13, as the crescent of Islamic holy month for Zill Hajj was not sighted on Friday evening. Across India, there were no reports of moon sighted from any place, after which the decision of Eid was taken by religious leaders. Saudi Arabia’s Supreme Court has declared that Eid-ul-Adha will be celebrated on September 12, 2016.
Bakra Eid in India has been announced by a team of noted Islamic Scholars working under the Central Ruiyat-e-Hilal Committee – Hyderabad Deccan. After the moon was not sighted on Friday evening, a meeting was held within the committee. The committee members also confirmed that the crescent has not been sighted across any districts in India. Which means, Saturday will be the 30th day of Dhu al-Qa’dah, the 11th month of Islamic calendar and Eid-ul-Adha will be celebrated ten days after Saturday, that is September 13.
The meeting was attended by Majlis-e-Ulema-e-Deccan Secretary-General and Muslim Personal Law Board member Maulana Syed Qubul Pasha Shuttari and other noted clerics.
Saudi Arabia to celebrate Eid-ul-Adha on September 12
On Friday evening, Saudi Arabia’s Supreme Court announced in an official’s statement that Eid-ul-Adha will begin on Monday, September 12, and the Day of Arafah, which precedes the Eid festival, will be on Sunday 11, September.
The Day of Arafah marks the second day of Hajj pilgrimage at the holy site of Mecca in Saudi Arabia. Earlier, Egypt’s Astronomical and Geophysics Institute had announced that the country would celebrate the first day of Bari eid on 11 September. However after Saudi’s announcement it means that Egypt will instead celebrate the first day of Eid on September 12.
Eid-ul-Adha, also known as Bakri Eid lasts for three days, honours the willingness of the Prophet Abraham to sacrifice his elder son Ismail as an act of submission to God. Eid-ul-Adha falls on a different date each year, as the Islamic calendar is based on lunar cycles.
