The global average internet connection speed in the third quarter has improved, according to Akamai Technologies’ State of the Internet (SOTI) Report for Q3, 2016. The average speeds for connecting to the internet increased 2.3 percent to 6.3 Mbps, which is an improvement of 21 percent year-over-year.
“We have continued to observe positive long-term trends in both average and average peak connection speeds around the world,” David Belson, editor of the State of the Internet Report said. Across the globe, South Korea remained the leader when it comes to laser-fast internet speeds with an average of 26.3 Mbps, while Singapore recorded the highest average peak Internet traffic connection speeds with 162 Mbps. However, India once again had the lowest average connection speeds among countries in the Asia Pacific region at 4.1 Mbps.
In terms of internet penetration, Akamai recorded over 806 million unique IPv4 addresses from 242 unique countries or regions. While this has been a slight decrease of 0.3 percent over last year in the same quarter, Akamai suggests this number reflects well over 1 billion web users. Globally, approximately 55 percent of the countries or regions witnessed a quarter-over-quarter increase in unique IPv4 counts. Six out of the top 10 countries, including India, witnessed modest gains in unique IPv4 counts. India, in particular, witnessed a quarter-over-quarter growth of 5.3 percent. Of the 14 countries which saw declines of 10 percent or more as compared with the previous quarter, includes China with 1.8 percent and Germany at 0.6 percent.
The Asia Pacific region continued to lead the world in average peak connection speeds in the third quarter, with countries including Singapore, Hong Kong, and South Korea all witnessing average peak connection speeds above 100 Mbps. India, which has been ranked 107 globally, witnessed an average peak connection speed of 27 Mbps, a 3.2 percent rise quarter-over-quarter leading to a change of 45 percent year-on-year.
As more countries adopted broadband connections this quarter, demand for services too has surged. Currently, the global threshold for broadband adoption is at 4 Mbps and India witnessed an adoption rate of 30 percent in the third quarter this year, which is a significant jump of 116 percent on a year-on-year basis. This could be attributed to the debut more video streaming services in the country including the popular Netflix and more recently Amazon Prime Video. These services, which strive to offer 1080p resolution video require a minimum of 3 Mbps speeds.
For the first time, India joined the top 10 countries in the third quarter boasting the largest quarterly gain by far amongst the group as its IPv6 adoption rate rose 715 percent from 2.1 percent adoption to 17 percent adoption in IPv6 traffic. Akamai attributes the rise to the significant increase in IPv6 support across the networks of several major Indian mobile operators including the recently launched Reliance Jio (which has been found to be one of the top network providers by IPv6 request volume with 74 percent requests) , MTS India, and Idea Cellular. Adoption of the speedier 10 Mbps broadband at the global level increased 5.4 percent quarter-over-quarter, while adoption of 15 Mbps and 25 Mbps broadband rose 6.5 percent and 5.3 percent respectively.
As more and more power is put into the modern mobile devices, connection speeds have also been significantly impacted. Today, users are placing calls over the internet instead of using their regular network providers’ minutes. Now, this in turn impacts the internet connectivity as well as speed limits. There has been a rise not only in smartphone subscriptions but data consumption too has increased in volume. More people are opting to consume data over their mobile devices instead of a standalone system. Mobile data traffic has shown year-on-year growth of 51 percent and has increased by 11 percent in the last quarter alone.
In India, where the launch of Reliance Jio services has put to test the network providers’ capability of handling the demand for high-speed 4G connectivity, the average connection speed for mobile connections was 3.5 Mbps. The page load time on broadband in the third quarter was 4131 millisecond and 5909 millisecond on mobile.
