Asia Team Championships: K Srikanth, Sai Praneeth power India to 5-0 win over Philippines in opener

India badminton men’s squad thrashed Philippines 5-0 in their Asia Team Championships opener in Malaysia on Tuesday. India were ruthless as they did not drop a single game in the five matches that they played with all of them finishing under 30 minutes.

In the first match of the day, Kidambi Srikanth beat Ros Leonard Pedrosa 21-11, 21-12. In the second match, the doubles pair of Manu Attri and Reddy B Sumeeth thrashed Carlos Antonie Cayanan and Philip Joper Escueta 21-15, 21-13. In the third, Sai Praneeth beat Arthur Samuel Salvado 21-6, 21-10 to give India a 3-0 lead.

The fourth match was probably the closest Philippines came to a win as Peter Gabriel Magnaye and Alvin Morada took a stern test of the Indian pair of Arjun MR and Ramchandran Shlok. However, the Indians prevailed 21-18, 21-17. In the last match of the day, India’s Sameer Verma made light work of Lanz Ralf Zafra as he beat him 21-15, 21-12.

India will face Maldives next on Wednesday.

Asia Badminton Championships: Indian men rout Maldives 5-0, face Indonesia next

This was India’s second win on the trot after beating Philippines in their opener on Tuesday.

World No 5 Kidambi Srikanth led the charge as India drubbed Maldives 5-0 to register their second win on the trot in the men’s team competition of the Asia Badminton Championships in Malaysia on Wednesday.

Kidambi started the proceedings, easily outplaying Shaheed Hussein Zayan 21-5, 21-6 in the first singles match, before B Sai Praneeth took just 17 minutes to get the better of Ahmed Nibal 21-10, 21-4. The rest of the tie followed a similar script as Sameer Verma toyed with Mohamed Arsalaan Ali 21-5, 21-1 to take an unassailable 3-0 lead.

In the men’s doubles matches too, the Indians hardly broke a sweat. In the first doubles match,

Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty beat Shaheed Hussein Zayan and Shaheem Hassan Afsheem 21-8, 21-8 before Arjun MR and Shlok Ramachandran beat Mohamed Arsalaan Ali and Ahmed Nibal 21-2, 21-5.

The Asia Team championship is also a qualifier for the Thomas Cup Final with the semi-finalists earning the right to play in Bangkok in May.

India men will face Indonesia on Thursday while the women will be up against another tough opponent in Japan.

Asia Badminton Team Championships: PV Sindhu wins but India lose to Japan, still progress to quarter-finals

Indian women shuttlers advanced to the Badminton Asia Team Championship quarterfinals despite a 1-4 loss to Japan in which PV Sindhu notched the country's only win.

Sindhu extended her domination over World No 2 Akane Yamaguchi with a straight-game win.

Despite the loss, India qualified for the quarter-final in both the women's and men's competition.

The Indian women finished second in Group W with one win and one loss ahead of Hong Kong China but behind Japan. The Sindhu-led squad had defeated Hong Kong China 3-2 in its opening group tie.

With a rampaging 5-0 wins over lower-ranked Philippines and Maldives, the Indian men's team too has qualified for the quarter-finals from Group D.

The Indian men will now be up against mighty Indonesia in their last Group D tie later in the day.

Taking the court first, Olympic silver-medallist Sindhu dished out a fine attacking performance to beat Yamaguchi 21- 19 21-15 in 36 minutes.

By virtue of this win, World No 4 Sindhu now enjoys a 5-3 head-to-head record against Yamaguchi.

However, Sindhu did not get enough support from her teammates as Sri Krishna Priya Kudaravalli was no match for World No 13 Sayaka Sato, losing the second singles 12-21 10-21 to help Japan draw level.

Doubles specialist Ashwini Ponnappa was then tamed 14-21 12-21 by world No.16 Aya Ohori in the third singles match as Japan took a 2-1 lead.

It was then left to the doubles specialists to bring India back into the tie but both the Indian pairs went down after a good fight.

The onus was on Sanyogita Ghorpade and Prajakta Sawant to draw parity for India but they lost 17-21 17-21 against Shiho Tanaka and Koharu Yonemoto in the first doubles match to hand Japan an unassailable 3-1 lead.

The script turned out to be the same for India in the last inconsequential match of the tie as Ponnappa and N Sikki Reddy lost 18-21 18-21 to Misaki Matsutomo and Ayaka Takahashi.

Srikanth loses as Indian men go down 2-3 to Indonesia in Badminton Asia Team Championship

The result did not impact India’s progress at BAC with the team already having qualified for the quarter-final.

The Indian men’s side tasted defeat for the first time in the 2018 Badminton Asia Team Championship after going down 2-3 against Indonesia on Thursday.

After winning their opening two ties rather comfortably against Philippines and Maldives, the Indians were up against it versus a strong Indonesian team from the word go. World No 4 K Srikanth took on the 13th-ranked Jonathan Christie in the first singles match but was beaten in straight games 17-21, 17-21 in just 35 minutes, as his indifferent start to 2018 continued.

The impressive Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty then brought India level by defeating Mohammad Ahsan and World No 1 Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo 18-21, 21-18 24-22 in 53 minutes.

It was then B Sai Praneeth’s turn to take on world No 9 Anthony Ginting and the Indian was not the favourite to come through but he did so – and that too in straight games – to put India in the lead. He ran ahead 21-18, 21-19 in 44 minutes to record a crucial win.

MR Arjun and Shlok Ramchandran then had a chance to seal the tie for India but they went down in three games to Angga Pratama and Rian Agung Saputro 14-21, 21-16, 21-12 in 48 minutes.

The deciding game was always going to be out of India’s reach, as doubles specialist B Sumeeth Reddy was pitted against singles world No 39 Ihsan Maulana Mustofa, who won 21-12, 21-7 in just 25 minutes. Sumeeth Reddy played the third singles tie because Sameer Verma had a neck sprain and was rested.

The defeat did not impact India’s men’s team as such in the tournament as they had already qualified for the quarter-finals where they will face China.
